Are Whitening Strips Good For Your Child’s Teeth?
July 06, 2018 ABC Children's Dentistry
If your child’s teeth are looking a bit more yellow or stained, you may be tempted to try whitening them. While adults often nothing about applying products like whitening strips or whitening toothpaste, you need to think twice before doing the same with your child’s teeth.
We’ll talk about it in this issue.
Is it normal for my child’s teeth to be less than pearly white?
Yes, it’s quite normal for your child’s permanent teeth to be less white than the baby teeth. That’s mainly because permanent teeth contain more dentin, which surrounds the tooth’s pulp. Because tooth enamel is translucent, the darkness of the dentin is more easily visible.
At what age is it safe to whiten my child’s teeth?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends waiting until your child is 18 before trying whitening products, including strips and gels. The issue is that these products contain hydrogen peroxide to bleach your child’s teeth.
By the age of 18, your child’s tooth enamel should be fully calcified. If whitening products are used before then, the enamel could be broken down, resulting in damage to your child’s gums and increased tooth sensitivity.
Are there alternatives to teeth whitening products for my child?
The best pathway to keeping your child’s teeth looking their best is good hygiene (brushing at least twice daily and once after each meal) and professional polishing at your child’s dentist office.
It’s also important for your child to avoid foods and drinks that can stain their teeth, including:
- sodas;
- sports drinks;
- cherry and berry juices;
- candy that’s been dyed;
- dark fruits and vegetables; and
- citrus fruits.
